~ Merry Christmas and Happy New Year ~

Well, it's that time of year again! I wish all of you, that what you wish for yourselves and good health and happiness. Peace and good will to all. An end to all conflict and poverty.
Well, that's what we would wish for, the reality is gonna be a bit dissapointing but that doesn't mean you can't wish for it and maybe in the end, if enough people wish, it may just come true one day. Keep wishing and make your bit of the world good.
The lady above is the very lovely Tiffani Thiessen, star of screen, tv and my fantasy.
Come on Fox, make the second series of Fastlane so we can see what happened to Billie after she got stuck in leg with a needle full of heroin! What a crap way to leave it! For those who have no idea what I'm on about, there was an action detective type series starring the wonderful Tiff called Fastlane but it was canned after the first series! I didn't think it was at all bad but obviously the people involved in making it didn't like it, so they binned it. The last show had Tiff's character captured by the bad guys and stuck in the leg wth some heroin (which she had become adicted to before after working under cover) and then that was the last sceen - fade to black .. Just thought you'd like some background.
Anyway, enough of my fantasy.
Have yourselves a wonderful holiday and enjoy it as much as is humanly possible. Attack the new year with purpose and desire, making this new year the one you have been promising yourself for the last twenty.

Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year

Your Plastic Pal Who's Fun To Be With

Well, I was devastated! My favourite piece of technology reduced to a pile of plastic crap and still chattering away in Japanese about how good it's sensors in it's feet are at helping it to maintain a perfect balance!

Aah, bless!

And then this ..

Ow! Ow! Ow!

Now, as you can see, it's not going to be long before the world is run by superior humanoid robots with rockets on one arm and lightening fast reactions, able to target an escaping human at 500 yards!
We should all be afraid, be very afraid - that these things will be doing anything other than welding car bodies for the forseeable future!
Robotic surgeons! - Run away, run away!!

Not so much interesting as, Stupid!

Those of you out there in the world that own a laptop are probably well aware of the main problem with them .. heat! I'm sure you have all sat there with the smell of roast something wafting past your nose only to realise your leg is gently cooking under your little buddy?!
So, this brings me to, what must be the daftest and most potentially damaging (fatal!) accessory for your laptop you could buy (short of a big magnet or some dynamite!) .. The Laptop Cover!!

This just has to be a spoof because no sane person with just a small amount of exposure to using a laptop could believe this is a good idea. Maybe it's a leftover April fool??

Interesting ..

I have just read this article on the Techdirt blog and thought it was rather interesting. It just goes to show how badly people understand the workings of technological business planning, marketing and the consultants conning them out of their marketing budgets. Anyway, I'm not certain I said that right but if you read this article, you will understand (better than me probably!) ..

Can We Have Some Metrics On How Effective Metrics Are?

from the seduced-by-numbers dept

There's just something about "metrics." I spent Monday at the Word of Mouth Marketing Association's Research Symposium, which was supposed to be all about learning how to track the impacts of word of mouth marketing attempts. Of course, that makes an implicit assumption: that you can, need or want to track those things in a simple manner. It seemed like the key point made by many of the attendees (mainly from big companies) is that they need to figure out how to translate "WoM" campaigns back into the common terminology and "metrics" they use in traditional marketing in order to convince CEOs and marketing VPs that word of mouth campaigns make sense. Metrics was the word of the day, with multiple people saying that without metrics, word of mouth marketing was effectively pointless. There's just one problem with this: metrics can often be worse than useless. Metrics are only as good as what they're measuring, and they're often measuring either the wrong thing, or something that can easily be gamed. A month ago, Joel Spolsky had a fantastic post on the ridiculousness of metrics, and how they're often used mainly by consulting firms to convince big companies to funnel money into the consultants' bank accounts.

With all of that in mind, it's not that surprising to see a story noting that web analytics firms (who have been at this for quite some time, and you would have thought had the kinks worked out) are revising the traffic certain sites got downward, often by tremendous amounts. Apparently, the website Entrepreneur.com didn't have 7.6 million visitors (as reported), but just over 2 million. That's not a small error. The problem, it seems, is that the site put news content into unwanted pop-up ads, often delivered by adware on lots of computers. In other words, the pageview may have happened, but it wasn't wanted, and it's quite likely that it was closed before it even loaded (perhaps with anger). In other words, it was a metric that was gamed. Keep this in mind when you hear silly reports like MySpace passing Yahoo in pageviews according to various metrics companies. As the article linked here notes, part of that may be due to Yahoo shifting their web mail app to AJAX, making it much more efficient and user friendly -- but requiring fewer page views. Equally responsible, however, would be MySpace's awful design that requires extra page impressions to actually get anything done. In other words, in focusing so much on the "page views" metric, the incentives encourage bad design. The companies that win the metrics game are the ones who are designed in ways that upset users, rather than those that make their service better, faster and more efficient. Normally, that would be a clear indication that the metrics are all wrong -- but very few people seem to care. They just continue focusing who is ahead of whom on the list -- and plenty of bad decisions continue to get made because of this blind allegiance to metrics.

There, see, now you understand don't you?
Well even if you don't, you can see how number manipulation and technobabble can con even the best businesses out of money and sense to line the pockets of these consultants and make them think they got a good job done!

Digital Dreams or Nightmare?

Details Below ..

This one has been in the cooker for quite a while now, but Gibson has finally released its HD.6X-Pro Guitar System, known as the HD Les Paul amongst the cool kids. The new guitar marks quite a shift for Gibson, featuring an all digital setup, and uses a Cat5 cable instead of a regular guitar cord to transfer your musics to an amp or computer. Gibson calls this technology MaGIC, and it allows you to transfer string data from all six strings individually, along with a mic signal and a full-on six string signal (the normal kind). MaGIC also supports two channels of upstream, to offer a stereo monitor to the player. Most of the "MaGIC" happens inside "BoB" the Breakout Box, which converts the digital info into analog, and can send each string or combinations of strings to different amps. You can also plug the guitar straight into your computer, to record the digital signal directly, for which all necessary plugins are included, and the eventual plan is to allow for jamming over the internets in a low-latency form. Lastly, if you get bored of all this digital voodoo, you always switch the guitar to all analog mode, which bypasses the digital circuitry entirely and outputs a signal via a traditional 1/4-inch plug. The guitar is currently going for $4000, with 100 signed-by-Les-Paul models available for $8k. Sounds a bit steep, but that's the price you have to be willing to pay for the privilege of unadulterated face melting.

Now, I have always been a fan of gadgets and the like and have tried (to great expense) almost every incarnation of guitar to midi/effects/digital there has been. I still own a Roland GR700 setup and a Stepp DGX and have a Roland VG88 system that I managed to get hold of at an auction for half price (and found out why it was half price when I got it home!). The reason I have tried all these adaptations of midi/digital guitar nonsense (because ultimately, it is nonsense) is that I love the sounds and effects that can be used by all those lucky keyboard players out there! I can't play a keyboard to save my life but I can knock the odd tune or so out of a guitar and any access I can get to these sounds, I will try. Not all have been successful. The most "useable" system (so far) has been the very old and superceeded GR700 Roland. Ok, it had a bit of time lag on the lower notes and came with a pedalboard the size of a small village but it got quite acceptable results and I used it for a couple of years in a country band I was in called "The Black Spur Road Band" - there's a name eh? Since then I have tried various Roland and Yamaha hex pickup arrangements with GR50/GR30 systems and now have a GK3 pickup on a couple of my guitars which give me access to some great sounds from the likes of the GR30 and the VG88 (Roland). But and it's a big but, it's still not quite right. The feel is somewhat odd and I know you're thinking "of course it's odd playing keyboard sounds on a guitar" but that's not what I mean. It is very difficult to play with the accuracy required to not get some strange squeeks and sometimes, completely wrong notes at volumes that are impossible to diguise! Some will say "learn to play right you twat!" and to a degree, they would be right but a guitar is (unless you are classically trained) not an exact instrument. Rock and roll is not exact in its implementation. This is where digital is not good as it is discrete in its operation and without all the stuff that goes on underneath the keys in a keyboard, very difficult on a guitar. The VG88 is closest to being very playable as it is more of an effect pedal than a midi instrument and to that end, works very well (when mine feels like working!). I have no idea what this monstrosity from Gibson will do or sound like but maybe it needed the guitar boys to look at the problem to put all that knowledge of guitars into something digital.
I can't see me trying one of these any time soon due to the price tag (unless I get one for Christmas!! - ha ha ..) but I will watch the reviews with interest.

Christmas is Cancelled!

So, we can't hang Christmas decorations now eh?! We can't have a Christmas Party at work now eh?! You can't even look like you're enjoying yourself or the Misery Police will come and put an end to it!!
Look, if any of you out there take any notice of all this rubbish and political defectiveness, then it's your own fault! How on earth can anyone take these f*cking idiots seriously? Lets get on with living in our own country doing our own thing the way we want to do it! If someone else don't like it, then F*CK RIGHT THE HELL OFF!
There is no legal or moral requirement for anyone to stay in this country if they don't like it, be they British or not, so bye bye!

Merry Christmas everyone!
Party 'till everything drops off!
Bah Humbug!
